TOEFL Simulation / Simulación de TOEFL

October 31, 2005
This weekend I decided to take a TOEFL test under simulated circumstances, the result was actually better than I first thought, taking into account several factors against me like the fact that I had to reboot my computer two times, that it rained like hell, and that I had an appointment with my cousin to go out shopping and I was kind of late for the meeting so I had to answer faster in order to get there on time. Another important factor is that I decided to take the test without having any prior information about the different kind of questions or length.

I started the simulation with the listening part, I found a big distractor in this section and it was presented to me in the form of the little pictures with guys with a really stupid face or terrible clothes, so I couldn’t help to stop thinking about it… but at the end of this section I found a good way to correct this problem and it was to close my eyes and just focus on the conversations.

Then came the structure part, at this point a terrible storm started and since I live on the last floor of my building the noise was really loud and I thought that my little birds were calling me or something so I was very distracted.

After a little break I went to the bathroom and I had some chokis those are a small balls of corn covered with chocolate. I think I will have them too on the real test, because they don´t make you feel too full and they are very tasty.

Then the reading comprehension part… I got 6 readings, all of them very interesting except one about Native American Construction… this sole reading took a lot of my time and since there was a lot of unknown vocabulary for me it was a very stressful lecture.

At the end I got to write an essay about the most interesting class that I ever had and why… of course I wrote about my beloved Art History Class, which I loved with all my heart, I really hope I get such a pleasant essay to write on the actual TOEFL.

Well at the end of all this stuff my final result on each section (with a max. score of 30 points on each section):

Listening: 26
Reading: 25
Structure / Writing: 08 to 26 depending on my essay.

For a total range of 197 to 257.

I think of this range a really nice one because I haven’t studied anything about this test methodology and the fact that I had no idea what they were going to ask me I had a good result and also taking into account that I didn’t just sit to answer the test but I also took notes about the questions and how they were asked.

Strategy for the TOEFL test will follow…
